Baralaba North Continued Operations Project

Baralaba North Continued Operations Project

The Baralaba North Continued Operations Project (BNCOP) was granted Mining Lease approval to increase coal production from the approved rate of 1Mtpa to a peak production rate of 3.5Mtpa in June 2016. The project will be a continuation of the open cut coal mine activities at Baralaba North.

The key component of the approvals process for the BNCOP is an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) under the Queensland Environmental Protection Act 1994.  The purpose of the EIS is to describe the existing environmental values of the project area, the potential impacts of the project and the ways of avoiding, mitigating or offsetting these potential impacts. The EIS will be lodged for assessment by the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage
Protection (EHP).

It is a requirement of Cockatoo Ltd's Controlled Action Approval for the Baralaba North Continued Operations Project (BNCOP), issued under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth), that environmental offsets are provided for the authorised unavoidable impacts to Matters of National Environmental Signficance.

A total of 820ha of land has been legally secured over two properties through two separate Voluntary Declarations to provide the required offsets and will be managed to ensure offset habitat values are achieved.
